Cherish Our Independence In This Land That We Love

Celebrating the 4th of July each year is a wonderful time to reflect and cherish our independence in this land that we love.  We have a rich and blessed heritage in this amazing free country.

We have a WINNER!

We want to congratulate our winner of the 4th of July GIVEAWAY from the Jones Real Estate Group!  Congratulations JOYCE ANDERSON!!!  We hope you have a wonderful time celebrating the 4th of July with this awesome gift!

Today we want to share with you the story of our beautiful national anthem and a few thoughts from members of the Jones Real Estate Group with the Phyllis Browning Company.

The Star Spangled Banner

On September 13, 1814, British warships fired shells and rockets onto Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor and pounded the American fort for 25 hours. The bombardment, known as the Battle of Baltimore, came only weeks after the British had attacked Washington, D.C., burning the Capitol, the Treasury and the President’s house.

A week earlier, Francis Scott Key, a 35-year-old American lawyer, boarded the British flagship in the Chesapeake Bay in order to persuade the British to release a friend who had recently been arrested. Key’s tactics were successful.  However, because he had gained knowledge of the impending attack on Baltimore, the British did not let him and his companions go. The Americans were allowed to return to their own vessel but the Britsh continued to guard them. On September 13, Mr. Key watched as Fort McHenry began being bombarded, eight miles away.

Key said this about the event, “It seemed as though mother earth had opened and was vomiting shot and shell in a sheet of fire and brimstone.”  In the darkness of the night, Key saw red flares erupting in the night sky and he was certain the British would win. The hours passed slowly, but in the clearing smoke of “the dawn’s early light” on September 14, he saw the American flag—not the British Union Jack—flying over the fort, announcing an American victory!

After witnessing such a spectacular event, Key wrote his thoughts on paper while he was still on board the ship and set his words to the tune of a popular English song.  Later, his brother-in-law, a commander of a militia at Fort McHenry, read Key’s and had it distributed under the name “Defence of Fort M’Henry.” The Baltimore Patriot newspaper began to print it, and within weeks, Key’s poem, which had been named “The Star-Spangled Banner,” appeared in print across the country.  Keys’s words have become an immortalized anthem that we proudly sing in celebration of that great victory won on a September night in 1814 and of the precious liberties we enjoy in this blessed nation.

Our Patriotic Sentiments

The 4th of July humbles me when I think of the patriots who risked theirs and their family’s lives and fortunes to win this country’s independence from tyranny. The day also reminds me of our brave men and women serving in theaters all across the planet to keep us free!  With all the issues that we face, it is still the best place on earth to be!- Greg Jones

I have reflected a lot lately about what the state of our country must have been in 241 years ago.  I have thought about the families that had come to America to create a new life for themselves.  I have thought about the truly inspired men who gathered together and created the Declaration of Independence and I feel fortunate that they did this.  In this day, I am not sure a document like this could have been created and fought for the way that document was.  I am incredibly grateful for our founding fathers and for all those men and women who have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice so much so I can enjoy my freedoms.- Gary Wolff

From all of us here at the Jones Real Estate Group Happy 4th of July and Thank You to those men and women who daily protect our freedom and liberities!

Frank Valadez loves to spend time with family and friends on the 4th of July.  His favorite things to eat on that day are a perfectly flamed grilled Hamburger, his wife Jackie’s Homemade Potato Salad and Cold Beer.  Food.com has a fantastic recipe for the “Perfect Burger“.  Check it out and let us know what you think!

RECIPE

BURGER

1 egg
1 teaspoon mustard (regular or Dijon)
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 small onion, finely grated
1 clove garlic, minced
1⁄2 teaspoon salt
1⁄2 teaspoon pepper
1 lb medium ground beef

DIRECTIONS
Lightly oil grill& heat BBQ to medium.
Whisk egg in a bowl& add next 6 ingredients.
Add any of the “stir-ins” that appeal to you.
Crumble in beef& using your hands or a fork, gently mix together.
Handle the meat as little as possible – the more you work it, the tougher it gets.
Gently shape (don’t firmly press) mixture into burgers about ¾ inch thick.
Using your thumb, make a shallow depression in the centre of each burger to prevent puffing up during cooking.
Place burgers on the grill, close lid& BBQ until NO LONGER PINK INSIDE, turning once, about 6 – 8 minutes per side.
An instant read thermometer should read 160F.
Don’t abuse your burgers by pressing with a spatula, pricking with a fork or turning frequently as precious juices will be lost!
Tuck into a warm crusty bun& add your favourite toppings.

Celebrate- Honor- Remember

From the desk of Greg Jones…

On this Memorial Day 2017 I remember friends, family, and complete strangers who have given their lives so that all of us can live in this wonderful country in peace and freedom. Additionally I am very grateful for all the men and women of our armed services who are serving in various theaters around the world on guard for us.

“All Gave Some, and Some Gave All”

DID YOU  KNOW…

  1. Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May.
  2. This holiday honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.
  3. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.
  4. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades.
  5. It unofficially marks the beginning of summer.

For the Love of a Stranger

by Holly Rodriguez

I am a soldier, a mother, a daughter, a lover and wife,
Before I became a defender I had a full life.
I‘m a brother, a soldier, a father, an uncle and man,
I‘ve seen terrors of war that you can’t begin to comprehend.

Preserving freedom and the rights of people in our great land,
Against those who bring us destruction and can’t understand
A soldier’s deep love of our country and courage to fight,
For America’s people so they can sleep in peace at night.

Remember that the right for you and me to remain free
Comes from sacrifices of brave people you may never meet.

From all of us at Jones Real Estate Group, we hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend and take time to reflect on the many wonderful blessings we enjoy in the great country.

Hats, Hot Browns & Horses- The Jones Real Estate Group’s Guide to The Kentucky Derby

Ahh….it’s that time again. The first Saturday in May is a ”holy day of obligation” for those born and bred in the bluegrass state commonly known as Kentucky. Yes, it’s The Kentucky Derby!  The Jones Real Estate Group wants to hear from you!  We want to know Which horse do you think will win & the number of lengths for the win.  Monday, the lucky winner will receive a set of Derby glasses from Greg & Ann Jones.

As many of you may know, Greg and I are Louisville, Kentucky natives who grew up going to the Derby.  But perhaps you didn’t know, that another member of our group, Mike Giddens, also spent time attending the Derby and shares our great love of the entire experience that is The Kentucky Derby.  Together we have created a great guide to help you experience The Kentucky Derby at it’s finest and pick the prize winning pony this weekend.

The Kentucky Derby is NOT just horse racing…it’s the whole experience of being in Louisville, KY among thousands of people celebrating a sporting event that lasts only two minutes and has been consecutively run since it’s inception in 1875! Whether you are a racing fanatic, or looking to find a gorgeous Derby hat, or digging into the Derby fare at the buffet tables or tasting a Mint Julep for the first time- it is a treat to place on your bucket list! Don’t wait…bite the bullet and plan your adventure!!

The Derby Parties are back to back…very little time to rest in between and there is lots of eating, drinking and reading the Racing Form.  For Greg & I, we love to go back and stay with the good friends we love and miss so much!  These are friends we see on a regular basis, but we always seem to run into someone at the track from years gone by.  That’s why this is so much fun for us.

There are lots of fun events and the partying can go on until the early hours of the morning, but you really need your sleep to be fresh and ready for a long day on the track at Churchill Downs!

Greg has been going to the track since he was a wee boy and would sneak under the fence where all of the horse stables are to get in. In those days, the security was not as sophisticated as it is now. I started going to the track in high school and was hooked! I actually started betting when I was 9 years old. Mike Giddens went to his first Kentucky Derby when he was 16 years old and loved it so much that  in the late 80’s he helped host a radio show on horse racing in Baton Rouge, LA .  Mike also had a 900 number that would give you a selection for the race at $10 dollars a clip!  Today, Mike said this about his first experience there,  “My first Kentucky Derby was in 1978, I was 16 and bet 2 across on Affirmed…..At the window after getting paid, I told the Teller, this is too easy. The gentleman in the plaid jacket behind me replied, ‘Have a nice life Kid.’   It took me several years to understand what that meant. Fast forward 41 years . . . I miss going to the Derby with my lifelong friends.”  As you can see, Mike & I agree that the Derby is best spent with great friends!

Here are some of our BEST tips to help you enjoy your Kentucky Derby experience:

#1-Pack sunscreen – Men this applies to you too ! The sun can be brutal and if your seat is in the sun you need to be ready.
#2-Pace your alcohol consumption and drink lots of water– Plan ahead to visit the restrooms in plenty of time to see any of the races. The lines get long…especially in the cheap seats.
#3-Place your Derby bets early and often–  Both Mike & I agree that the lines get long…especially in the cheap seats.
#4- Wear comfy shoes-Ladies, I know you want to dress the part but…remember to take a pair of comfortable shoes. The heels will not be comfortable by the time the Derby race starts at about 5:30 or so in the afternoon. There is concrete everywhere and lots of steps. Depending if you have a parking pass, you will have to walk!

#5- Derby Hats-  Let’s just be honest hats do get in the way….I hate to say this but once the hat goes on, you’ll have hat hair and if it’s hot, the hair will be worse! By the end of the day, you will swear never to wear a hat again. But what the heck…It’s the Derby!
#6- Plan ahead where to stay & eat– Google places to stay, restaurants for eating (RESERVATIONS ARE A MUST IN ADVANCE) and there are lots of packages available for tickets. Overnight is usually a three day minimum and may include Derby tickets, dining and different parties around the city. If you fly, take a cab to your hotel and plan on taking the bus (reserved buses) that takes you to the front entrance of the track.

#7- Say Cheese!– Take lots of pictures and enjoy the people watching.  It’s some of the best in the world!

#8- Know Your Budget– Expect to spend $3,000 per person for just the minimum stay (3 nights) this does not include air fare, food, or betting money. Some packages do include a bus to and from the track. (This is by far the best way to travel to and from Churchill Downs) Or, if you are lucky enough to have friends in Louisville, call them now for your trip next year.

And what would the Kentucky Derby be without the horses?  If you don’t know much about the horses in this year’s race check out this great link:  https://www.kentuckyderby.com/horses.  Here you can check out the horse’s number, starting gate, owner, trainer, breeder and lots more!

Have you decided what horse you think is going to win this Saturday?  Here are Greg’s, Mike’s and my own pics for who the winning horse could be.

Greg’s first pick is Gormley.
Greg’s long shot is Fast and Accurate. (If you know Greg, you’ll know why!)
Ann’s pick is Always Dreaming.

Mike’s picks even though he has no wager on Saturday are:

Girvin– Top choice coming off a foot injury.  This horse is fresh and has tactical speed!
Gormley-Destroyed a weak field in the Santa Anita Derby.
MCracken—Loves the track and will be closing!

Enjoy your weekend and remember: Clink Clink Pour! Sip Sip Hooray, Happy Derby Day!
